The fight

img_2999_2

Being a Christian is not easy. The hoards for the enemies of God are against you and their main aim is to bring you down, not your soul, but your thoughts and feelings. Your life is hide with Christ on high, beyond the reach of harm. Nothing can take away the Christians safety and certainty in the household of faith, and no one can take Gods people from him. He has paid the ultimate price for their lives and will keep us, according to his promises, until the end.

Our thoughts and feelings can somehow cause us much trouble, and doubts can easily invade our minds and cause us to forget to lay hold of the sure and certain promises in Christ. We can feel physical symptoms of stress, pain, sickness, but all of these can never remove us from our status in heaven. We are physical beings and as humans, we feel these difficulties strongly, but all gloomy thoughts, all anxious cares and feelings do not take our lives out of our Saviours protecting hands.

Even though we bring our woes to him, we can still feel that it is too much for us. It is. We must give him his true place in our lives and cast ourselves upon his mercy and grace. It is safe to do this, as his mercy is boundless and his grace is unmeasurable. As we face each task of the day we carry them out in the strength of God. He promises strength for the day, and no more. Some of our problems arise when we become anxious about days in the future that we feel we could not face today. That’s fine – you don’t have to do these things today. When the time comes God will graciously give you what you need.

We think of provision as mainly physical, but the reality is that our mental, emotional and spiritual strength comes from the one who controls all things. Indeed these parts of our character are the key to our wellbeing, and the physical follows from this.

Trusting in God is always the key. However, we must also make sure that we are thinking and doing the right things. If we are entertaining faithless thoughts, it will be difficult for us to overcome our faulty thinking. We need to have the word of God before us and we need to be able to think of scriptures or even hymns, that will give us ammutition in the fight against the negativity.

The longer you wrestle with these kinds of difficulties

, the more adept you will become at handling the weapons. Read your bible every day, pray every day, not just for your self and your family, but for God’s people everywhere, who also struggle. Learn verses or passages of the bible by heart so that when the thougts come, the scripture will spring into your mind as a remedy or antidote against the poison.

I know that I would not have survived mind illness, without God’s word. It is the one thing I can rely on and that absolutely works in this internal fight. I also love many of the hymns that I have learned inadvertently through singing them in church. If God has blessed you with a good memory, use it to glorify him when you are troubled. If you are not good at remembering, there are ways to enhance your ability. Learning a short scripture verse every day, is a good place to start.

As I write this, I am also speaking to myself. If you are troubled with mental illness, the quicker you learn to bring it to God, the better. Life is full of troubles of all sorts, and it can bring you down with the constant blame and guilt. I know he has kept me all these years so far, and he will keep me to the end. Then he will take me home, where I will never be troubled again.

To walk this life with him, is the greatest thing any person can experience. My prayer is to walk here in such a way, that when I cross the threshold of eternity, I will hardly notice…

The kettle

img_1284

I wrote this little article a number of years ago, and have just rediscovered it… I believe it still remains cogent…

The kettle

In the church kitchen stands a small, electric kettle on the counter top. It is a 1970’s design, low level, limited capacity, with a pop off switch connected to a thermostat, so that it can be switched on to boil and it will automatically turn itself off.

The lead connects it to the mains switch directly above the kettle, on the kitchen wall.

It has been there for many years, as can be seen from the design and it is mainly used for incidental cups of tea.

In recent months, time has caught up with the engineering, as it has with the design. The switch will not stay in when pushed to the on position, and pops out immediately. This means that it has to be held in or it won’t work.

It was suggested that we could get a new kettle, but comments were made along the lines, that this is the kettle we have always had and is a historical heirloom. It seems that to stand and hold the switch, which doesn’t work, and watch the kettle boiling, is the price paid for holding on to the precious gadget.

Perhaps this is an allegory for our present situation here. Many things are not working, or not happening at all, despite efforts to convince each other that they are. We are plodding along, just holding down our out-of-date and decrepit ideas, in the hope that the past will see us through.

If we continue to gain comfort from a historical perspective that has little relevance to our present circumstances, the history will catch up with us and we will be history.

Today, three strips of cellotape were put across the switch, so that it was held in without a person having to hold it. The kettle boiled beautifully, as the tea was made and the device turned off at the wall. However, this is a highly dangerous strategy, and not really feasible in the long term. Someone has to bring in a new kettle, that works properly and will do the job it was meant to do.

Are we ready for some different ideas, alternative ways of looking at situations and trying innovative ideas, no matter how small?

It remains to be seen how the introduction of a new appliance will be accepted….and of course, an object is easy to replace…

Glorious preoccupation

img_3437

There is a place on the Christian pathway where we recognise and realise the person of Jesus in a very real and personal way. When we first trust the Lord, He makes us His own and we enter the doorway to a life walking in His gracious presence. As our walk with Him goes on, we appreciate Him and seek Him more nearly as we travel to the heavenly city, our home. As we continue our reading, study and meditation in His Word, we get a clearer view of the beauty of Jesus and the joy of being in His presence.
Jesus is our Saviour, our Redeemer and King, and as we linger on these truths in the Scriptures, they become increasingly enmeshed with our lives.
We find ourselves mulling on His actions, words and deeds, and longing to have His loving attitude to people at all times. We seek to be like Him and are drawn daily to the beauty of His character. There is no one like Him. No earthly love comes close. As we conform ourselves to the humility and faith of our Lord Jesus, it seems that everything else fits into place and all other loves take second place.
He is the matchless one, without equal, the only person worthy of love and worship… fall at His pierced feet where His blood was spilt for you… adore Him- king of all loveliness…

New start

img_5233

January is the month of the “new start” after the December “blow out.” A new diet; a clean up of the home; a new promise to live a better life and perhaps even begin going to church…

Unfortunately, the new resolutions almost never last, and by the end of the month, nothing has really changed.

We instinctively realize that our lives are not quite what they should be, and if we read the Bible, we find out that we are right. God tells us we are not good enough to even be in his presence, and we are cut off from knowing him truly.

Our inclination to sinfulness keeps us away from God and out of the blessings that he wants for us. Our wrongdoing must also be paid for, and we are unable to put things right by ourselves.

This is why JESUS came. His death on the cross was the consequence of our sin, and as he hung there on that cruel cross, he paid for all sinful people (you and me) who repent and trust in Him.

We can have a new life this year, a life of forgiveness and peace with God. To get it, we must humble ourselves, give up our sins and repent, and put our trust in what he did for us. It is the greatest gift of all, and lasts long into eternity, as we love God and walk with him forever.

Come to JESUS and ask him to forgive you and give you a new start.

The Spirit of truth

img_3906

John 16:7-15 NIV

“Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

A Christian is an exalted person. She knows the mind of God and speaks only what she hears Him say. She knows the Word of God through and through and knows the whole council of the Father, revealed in the infallible Word. This place of security is reached through spending protracted time studying the Word and relating it to the life lived here and now. The old life of unbelief and fear is gone. She seeks the will of God and is careful to follow the way of Christ every day. This is a relationship, not a religion. This is the Word lived out for the glory of God and the benefit of everyone in our lives.

Prayer is key. Praying in the Spirit and magnifying the will of God in all of life, is the day by day experience of the Christian. Prayer that persists through heartache and pain, laziness and carelessness, until it becomes the life and breath of our souls.

The Holy Spirit will shown us sin in our own life and in the lives of others. Sin in unbelievers and sin in people who claim Christ is with them. Our attitude to sin defines our Christian legitimacy and if we are truly God’s people, or not. The Spirit gives wisdom and discretion to search our own hearts- if we belong to God or not.

Do we think rightly about sin, righteousness and judgment?

The roots of all sin is unbelief. Refusing to believe keeps us away from God and all life and light. Our only guide to righteousness is the Spirit within, as it is He who teaches us the way of Christ and holy living. The enemy is already defeated and judged, and we have nothing to fear. The Holy Spirit will guide our feet in the way of truth and obedience and everything He teaches you is from the Lord Jesus himself. It is the Spirit who confirms our pathway and increasingly makes us Christ-like in our lives.

Where there is no Spirit there is no life. Where there is no love there is no life.

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NIV

“whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Proverbs 28:18 NIV

“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”

Resting

img_4264

What a sorry tale of woe we weave around our hearts and minds when we refuse the Lord and are satisfied with the things of this life, even if they are legitimate blessings. We live for earthly life and have little sensibility for the spiritual life, or the future life we claim, in the age to come.

For some reason we turn to anything else to pacify and comfort our tired and weary mind. Distractions will relax you and stultify your judgment like nothing else. We let it wash over us in a warm wave, and whatever attitudes and mindset happen to be in fashion, it goes in and tarnishes our holiness.

Matthew 11:28 NIV. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden with worries and I will give you rest..” Jesus is the ultimate burden bearer as He is able to shoulder all our troubles and comfort us with His comfort.

He reminds us that we belong to Him. This world is a passing shadow that we walk through in His strength and love. We are heading for another life, far above this dark world and we will live there forever as His children of light. The Holy Spirit dwells within us and shows us truth, teaches wisdom and gives the power to persevere.

Where do I look for council? Surely the best source in the Word of God. As I learn and imbibe all the council of God, so I am able to cope with my own difficulties and also help others. The rivers of living water will flow out and will refresh those who also seek the Lord.

What motivates us for work each day? The sense of indebtedness we feel towards Christ will enervate the body, mind and soul to serve Him with all our heart. To bring glory to His name is our first delight and to share the good news with outsiders, brings the fruit.

Our lives as Christians should be worth it, as we do all for His glory. The gloomy clouds will lift and we will see clearly the object of our love and so find that elusive rest for our souls…

Precious place

img_4071

There is a place-a precious place… just you and God … if you are not drawn to that place, you are not His… this place is fellowship and solace with the living God, and we are strengthened and renewed daily. There is no self-seeking here.

When we hit a seam of our own inherent weakness, life comes to a halt. Wether it is a sin, a failure of our ability or a sickness, we feel our weakness acutely. There is a place where no one else can be with us- our souls refuge and the sweet place where Christ dwells in all His glory. It is in this place that He speaks to us and assures us of peace and love, and there we can rest secure.

Progress

img_4512

We more appreciate the love of Christ and his perfect obedience, as we continue to grasp our own rottenness. Any supposed goodness diminishes and we are left in no doubt that the scripture is true, “There is no one good, not even one.”

At this point despair can take hold of our minds, and we sink into doubt, fear and gloom. Everything is an annoyance and the motivation to walk the Christian pathway fades or becomes a battle.

However, it is worth fighting on, as the prize is certain, no matter how we feel. The master will bring us safely through and show us his perfect way. If we keep going, sooner or later our feelings will cooperate, and we eventually feel the sunshine, but we must persevere to win the trophy.

The path is not finished until we reach the end, and strength is given for every step, no matter how dangerous or peacable. We will never be deserted, because The Word tells us that all is well with us, because of what Jesus did on our behalf, and no one can take us out of his care. The facts are clear and we see them clearly when the pathway is drenched in sunlight, but when gloomy clouds appear overhead, we tend to forget the facts and believe our feelings.

The only way to overcome this is through the scriptures, and to remember the promises of God, which apply in all situations and all states of mind. As we trust our good guide, we will gradually see the road more clearly and the clouds will dissipate and faith will shine brightly again.

As we recognise our own inability for goodness, the power of Christ will fill the heart and we will become more like him, and desire what he wants and speak his words of love to those around us.

God of failure

img_5391

Following Christ is a risky business, especially if you are seeking to be a somebody. To be successful in terms of this present life, is a strong desire within us and is fuelled by the hierarchal society in which we live.

We are congratulated and rewarded when we reach goals, pass examinations and make it to important milestones in life. These things are all good, and they help us to grow and develop as human beings, made in God’s image. However, none of us are as we should be and we often are motivated by a driving ambition to succeed, in ways that hurt us.

What if God were to take it all away? What if he asked you to leave success and learn to cope with perceived failure? What if your ambitions came to nothing and you found yourself in a position of not being able to operate, through no fault of your own?

It would be very hard to swallow. Your thinking processes and standard of judgment would need to be readjusted. The road backwards from popular success, to the low position of seeming failure, is painful. We need to ensure we are seeking refuge in the right places and putting our trust in true words.

There is another way of looking at this situation. If God is in charge of all events, surely he has this event in his purposes too. He has other great purposes for you, and will show you, if you trust him.

This world and its systems will not support you, either practically or emotionally, and many who find themselves in this state, are left ruined and sometimes destitute. For the Christian, it should be different, as we believe in the Bible. The truth of the words we read, daily, should be part of our mind set.

Jesus said, if we want to be great in the kingdom of God, we must be the servant of everyone. To be raised high in his estimation, you need to humble yourself and become willing to be serve all, even people you feel you have no regard for. It is easy to love those who love us, but very hard to express and show love to people we may positively dislike.

In the passage of our lives, as Christians, God will do things and take things away, in a way we cannot understand, and that seem to be detrimental to us, but to rest on his wisdom and power, is the only way to follow him in faith.

To be a king or queen in Christ’s kingdom, means becoming a zero in the kingdom of this time and place. God tells us to humble ourselves under his mighty hand, and in due time he will raise us up. To be great we must give up all – all that we are by nature, all that our imagined skills and abilities can do for us, and all that we think belongs to us. Our right to self-determination needs to be put aside as we subjugate our will to God’s will, his standards of perfection, and his purposes for us.

It sounds painful, and it is, and it seems that we are actually giving up ourselves, and that is true. The strange dichotomy is that as we lay down ourselves and give up our lives to God, we become more true than we have ever been. We come to know Christ more fully and as our lives are gained, we truly live and feel and know, the strength of the living God.

As we know Christ continually and grow in knowledge of ourselves, gaining the power to subdue our inbuilt sinfulness, we change in character, and live as God intended. Becoming more vibrant and like him.
