Water and blood

“This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.”

The fact that Jesus is the Son of Man as well as the Son of God is central to the doctrine about who Jesus is. He took upon Himself a human body, became man, so that He would qualify to be our Saviour. He came by water when He was born in Bethlehem’s stable and was born into this world as a baby. The eternal Son of God humbled Himself and became like one of His creatures, so that we could be saved from certain destruction and have eternal forgiveness and life with Him. He also identified with us in baptism, asking John the Baptist to baptise Him in the Jordan river. Jesus identified Himself with sinners, as He is the Saviour of sinners and took upon Himself our sin and was punished for it instead of us. The Scripture says that Jesus became sin for us and therefore bore away all our transgressions on His body on the tree.

Jesus was born of blood through the power of the Holy Spirit and was baptised into death for our sake. His body was enveloped in His blood when it was shed to pay for the sin of so many. His blood was His only covering as He was subjected to such shame. As the red blood coved His shame, so it also covers ours and gives us the opportunity to possess that robe of righteousness that we need to cover our sinful nakedness.

We know the truth about Jesus because of the Word of truth, which is the Word of God and the inner witness of the Spirit of God who dwells within us. It is not just emotion or intellectual impressions of what we think is true, but the Spirit witnesses with the Word of God that the words are right and true. The Spirit of God never goes against the Word of the Lord. Anything that is outside the Scripture is not to be trusted, for there is no way we can corroborate that is being put forward. We stand completely on the Holy Word and what it teaches us about our Saviour Jesus.

We live in dangerous days, beloved, for error and deception abound. We must not give our hearts to anyone except the Lord, as He is revealed in the Word of God. We have no other foundation and we must guard our minds and hearts fully against all evil, error and delusion.

“According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another builds on it. But let each man be careful how he builds on it. For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:10-11

We build our faith on the Word of God alone – on the Old Testament law and prophets and the New Testament Apostles. There is no other foundation than Christ and what has been revealed to us. Let us guard our minds and not give ourselves to emotion and impressions which have no concrete evidence that they are from God.
