The look of Jesus

“He has no form nor comeliness. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.”

Isaiah 53: 2-3

He was just ordinary looking. If you saw Him, you wouldn’t have any idea who He is. He was not a body builder or tall, good looking or anything special about His appearance. His authority was the Holy Spirit within. He spoke the Word of God, for He is God.

We do not know how Jesus looked, nor should we imagine. The second commandment says we are not to make images, not even in our minds. It creates problems in our view of Jesus and is a hinderance to our walk of faith.

We worship Christ in spirit and truth, not through pictures. Jesus is revealed in the Word of God. He is humble and takes no outward trappings of kingship or His everlasting power. His power is from within. He is the Saviour of all those who see their need and come to Him.

In past history, people had no schools to learn how to read. So, church was full of pictures to try to help people to understand. There was no other way at that time. In recent history, we have school, in many countries and many can learn to read. We must read, because the Word is a written word. God has provided teachers that teach us to read, and this is a precious skill to practice and foster. We draw near to God as we read His precious Word.

We “see” Jesus as we read. Not as pictures, but in the understanding of faith. We see Him clearly in the Scriptures, and through the working of the Spirit of God, we know Him more and more. His character is revealed and His example of perfection and purity.

May we “see” and know Christ in the clear revelation of His Word, without social prejudice or racial slant. He made all people, and is the Lord over all.
