The Spirit of truth

John 16:7-15 NIV

“Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

A Christian is an exalted person. She knows the mind of God and speaks only what she hears Him say. She knows the Word of God through and through and knows the whole council of the Father, revealed in the infallible Word. This place of security is reached through spending protracted time studying the Word and relating it to the life lived here and now. The old life of unbelief and fear is gone. She seeks the will of God and is careful to follow the way of Christ every day. This is a relationship, not a religion. This is the Word lived out for the glory of God and the benefit of everyone in our lives.

Prayer is key. Praying in the Spirit and magnifying the will of God in all of life, is the day by day experience of the Christian. Prayer that persists through heartache and pain, laziness and carelessness, until it becomes the life and breath of our souls.

The Holy Spirit will shown us sin in our own life and in the lives of others. Sin in unbelievers and sin in people who claim Christ is with them. Our attitude to sin defines our Christian legitimacy and if we are truly God’s people, or not. The Spirit gives wisdom and discretion to search our own hearts- if we belong to God or not.

Do we think rightly about sin, righteousness and judgment?

The roots of all sin is unbelief. Refusing to believe keeps us away from God and all life and light. Our only guide to righteousness is the Spirit within, as it is He who teaches us the way of Christ and holy living. The enemy is already defeated and judged, and we have nothing to fear. The Holy Spirit will guide our feet in the way of truth and obedience and everything He teaches you is from the Lord Jesus himself. It is the Spirit who confirms our pathway and increasingly makes us Christ-like in our lives.

Where there is no Spirit there is no life. Where there is no love there is no life.

2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NIV

“whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Proverbs 28:18 NIV

“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”
