Building what..?

img_4703

Nothing will build our church or save our church from failure, except faith in Christ. Faith results from and grows in response to obedience. There are no short cuts or quick fixes. It is not about a one-off emotional response but a complete turning around and following God in the opposite direction than we have been going…

But it is not our church. When a group of Christians meet to worship, pray and learn from the scriptures, this is His church- His living and glorious body. Everyone is involved and no one is without spiritual gifts. It is a living breathing building of spiritual people who are living in the power of the Spirit.

We do not build this church, Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith and the same is true for His church. Whatever we need, we ask for it and He supplies the need.

The problem arises when time goes by and we accumulate money and fame, we build the church out of bricks and cement, and we start to think we have something. We find ourselves glorifying the building and what we do in it, rather than the God who we are supposed to belong to. The needs of the structure we have built, both the building and our particular organisational structure, take precedence over the living stones, which are the people of God.

Resources are given for us to operate and we use them to present ourselves and build an empire, which can be a reflection of our own preoccupations and not the Living Christ. There is a reticence to use resources to actually supply the needs of people. We fail to recognise the difficulties faced by people who have a different mind set and life situation than us and presume our beliefs are superior. It is so difficult to see and notice our own sins, which may be subtle but deadly.

And so death pervades the church in a slow and creeping way, where it is not detected until the people leave, realising it is all law and no grace. It is so hard to let go of our well loved and self-orientated practices, and go right back to Bible principles. Faith is the only thing that pleases God, and we must live by faith, act and think in faith, and allow faith to infiltrate our souls.

Stop justifying wrong beliefs and earth motivated actions, and turn to the living God. Repentance is a word not used among us, and we imagine it is unnecessary in our “well educated” and “highly progressive” time and culture. Pride grows as we conclude our position before God is good, since we understand many things from His Word. But we admire the wrong things and we refute what is godlike because it is outside our experience. In fact our experience has atrophied and we cannot think to apply the Holy words to our real lives. So the question is asked… do we have a church?

If the Holy Spirit is not there, and He is not seen to be working in a dynamic way, then Christ is not there….

These truths should shake us and awaken us to our spiritual dilemma….

How to recognise God’s voice?

img_4840

How do I recognise God’s voice?

God never contravenes the written word
He does not reveal the future
He never lies or covers up our sin
He speaks lovingly to those who belong to Him
He can be angry if we refuse to hear or face up.
He calls your name- its personal. You must listen to recognise it.
The enemy can try to mimic God- we pray for discernment to decipher the lies.
God doesn’t blame or bring up past sins.
What He says comes true.
God has no failures, and never blames us.
God never looses patience.
The Father does not go off in a huff.
His voice is still and reassuring.
His name and nature is love…

Holy dissatisfaction

img_4696

“The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers…”

This poem by William Wordsworth speaks a godly sentiment. Wordsworth was not a Christian, and yet he had this insight into the way of the world and where it leads the human psyche. He could see the ultimate end of the capitalistic mindset and the consumerist culture. We may get many things in this life but loose our inner self and our God-given abilities.

  • Matthew 6:26 NIV  “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”

Long ago, before Wordsworth, the scripture expressed this same sentiment. Jesus said we can loose ourselves by seeking and finding the things of this life and exchanging our spiritual life in God with the trivial things that pass away. The theme is very much one or the other. We cannot have God and Mammon. If I want Jesus, then everything has to go.

We can try to play with fire. We will hold on to the bits that we know perfectly well God wants us to let go of, and try to live in holiness as well.! That is a misnomer. Holiness is God- likeness, and everything goes on the altar, no matter how “tame” we think it might be. To really want Christ-likeness, is very difficult for us and we always try to get out of some aspect of our lives that us not acceptable to God.

To give up this world is a sacrifice too far. We think if we give it up, we will loose out and be miserable. We think that God is trying to con us out of good times. Our spiritual lives are so shallow that we have little comprehension of the depths of knowing God. We still think of Him in human terms and the life of the Spirit is almost distasteful to our liking. This ought to trouble us. If We claim to belong to Christ, yet am not that in love with Him, or am not that earnest to follow Him closely, what am I?

God puts His finger on various things in our lives and we shy away. His words are all too unfamiliar and risky to my thinking, saying and doing.. and so, our powers are dimmed and laid waste. We forfeit joy, peace and love. We trade the reality of walking with Christ for fripperies!!

When we face the end, as we all must, what comforts in Christ will we have? What closeness of the Spirit of God will we be familiar with? How can we face the dark valley with only shadows? We reply that Christ will bring us safely through… will we glorify Him in that situation, or will we be almost overcome be fears?

And the here and now.. what depths of peace do we now possess? Do the events of life unsettle our faith? The scripture says, ” Do not fret, it leads only to evil..” Psalm 37:8 NIV

This suggest we should live life not worried at all! Who of us know what that is in reality?

The Lord Jesus suffered much in His time on earth, but He never let go of His trust in the Father and His faith in God’s plan for Him never wavered. His level of dissatisfaction with this earthly life was at the top of the scale, and yet His Holy life gave Him the grace and strength to go on.

The power of God was sufficient for Him and also us. Let us cultivate that mindset as we study The Word, both in text form and also in the living person of Christ.

God’s handiwork

img_4614

Ephesians 2:10 NIV
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good sworks, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Christians were created by GOD in CHRIST to be His holy people. We are spiritual beings with living souls. We were made that way by God, like the potter making a vessel for his own use. God’s handiwork is all over our lives – He has made us for Himself, to do His good works – not our own, for we have none.. The works for God were planned by God and our lives are set up, so that we do them, according to His will and for His glory…
There is no higher calling than this. God’s people are directly linked to Himself and we walk in His ways because they were set down for us before time began. Just as God chose His people, so He also ordains their lives and the spiritual calling that He has planned for them.
Our response is to trust and obey. We can do so with confidence, for God is Holy and can never lead us the wrong way.
To find this Holy calling is a place of peace and joy for the Christian. It is a place of assurance and where faith only grows and doubt is dealt with as we lay hold on the promises of God.
I am God’s handiwork- what an exalted privilege and ongoing state of the growing fruits of the Spirit.

Paths of peace

img_8467

Proverbs 3:13-18 NIV
“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.”

How sweet to walk the pathway that the Master trod. To know His nearness and the inward working of the Holy Spirit, filling the heart and mind with truth and light. We walk hand in hand, forgetting the weary past, and fighting the fight of holiness and joy.
The insight of the Spirit is more precious that any treasure this world has to offer, or any dear friendship that we might confide in.
The riches of a life lived in the mindset of wisdom, is the way to peace and power- not in this worlds estimation, but the daily joy of God’s presence and the instruction from the Word.
May We hold on to this and not the shifting sands of our foolish minds…

To be like Christ

tree-to-be-like-christ

In the quietness of the Christian’s times with God, we can feel a fear and a hesitancy to ask for certain things, that we know God would have us do. As we read the Scriptures, we get to know what He wants for us as His people, how He works and what He does in our lives. It can make us fearful. His desire is that we be like Christ, but it is so hard to pray for it. As we get to know our Father in heaven increasingly, we see what He is like and that He requires holiness and a close fellowship with Him and the Holy Spirit.

This is personal. Every Christian faces this with their God and Saviour.

What if God does things in my life that changes me and I don’t like it? What of He should require me to do things I don’t want to do that are painful? In my heart, I instinctively know what He will require – everything, but how will that affect me and what will it mean? I will be asked to put it all on the altar and follow the Master at all times. The cross must be lifted and the narrow way walked, that I might become the woman I am meant to be.

Self is nailed to the cross and crucified every day, silenced and bound, by the power of the Spirit. The bending of our knees is so hard for us to do, as we resist giving up our perceived self-determination, but really we are denying ourselves the greatest blessing of all.

Women and men in the past have proved His love and power, over and over again, in the most challenging of circumstances. They have rejected self and embraced Christ and have discovered a whole life full of delight, mercy and love, even in very dire life events and trails. To know Christ and the power of his resurrection is the ultimate holy ambition for every child of God. This is the desire of every child of God, but the way is difficult and cannot be walked without the Master.

How wonderful to actually be like the Lord and to know that daily communion with Him, and to feel presence of his Spirit.? To know rest and peace each day, no matter what the day is like, and to totally trust in His love to keep us at all times. All threats will vanish, wars and strivings cease, and the things of this world system will count as nothing to us.

As we walk, we will be better able to speak for Him and live true lives of service, living in the reality of His life, and doing what He tells us as we keep His commandments. The worries and problems generated by a sinful world will diminish, and we will exercise our faith to obey and not fret.

Once we set off on the Christian pathway, we can never go back. It is a journey through life with the one who knows all about it and has felt every pain that we feel. He totally empathises with us and His power is the same power that made everything and upholds the universes. We can have total confidence in Him, after all, He knows the way and will keep us on the road and walking, until we reach the end. For the Christian, there is really only glory, as our sins have been dealt with, we have God’s book, and we can talk with Him anytime.

We are going home. Even if we fall, fail, make wretched choices and become lazy, Christ himself will strengthen us and stir us up to keep His way and follow.

How wonderful to be a soul winner and be able to speak his message effectively and persuade others that they need Him too. His is the path of life, the meaning of life, and its highest destiny. To be like Christ is our dearest state and or highest ground, and our soul’s sincere desire.

Handbags

img_4592

What did David have in his handbag?

He knew he was going out to face an ultimate foe- an enemy who would conquer him and humiliate him easily. As he looked at that huge fighting machine of a man, he thought of instances in the past where God had kept him and given him the victory over wild beasts. David was victorious over the lion and the bear, against the odds. David knew God personally and up close and knew His power was all he needed.

David chose carefully that day, what he put in his handbag. He chose five small, smooth stones from the brook and placed them in his bag and tied it to his belt. David was a man of courage and supreme faith. He knew he only needed one stone against Goliath, but he also knew that military strength and height ran in Goliath’s family. Perhaps there were brothers or sisters who would come out against David in outrage of their dead brother. Maybe these stones were in readiness for any eventuality. David was ready and prepared. He thought about what he had to do and possibilities of what could happen. God was his helper, but he himself had to think and be prepared for the fight ahead. He had to think like God would…

David only needed the one small stone. God gave David the victory, and everyone saw it. No one came out to support Goliath.. who can face the living God, who’s power can work through an unlikely person.?

What was in Judas’ handbag?

Judas’ handbag was worth having! It had money in it- lots of it since it was the housekeeping for the whole disciple band. He liked being in charge of it, as he was corrupt and would take coins out if it for himself. Jesus knew, the others didn’t. Judas didn’t seem to much care, as long as he had what he wanted at the time.

Judas carried his handbag around for three years. He loved the feeling of being in charge and it made him feel important when the other disciples came and asked for funds. One day, the money began to dwindle. He was not happy about the feeling of need and dependance that came with that situation.

He remembered an offer he had been made a while back- the Chief Priests and religious leaders wanted Jesus delivered into their hands. They offered Judas a bribe – 30 pieces of silver – an amount that would keep Judas’ avarice happy for a month. He began to plot about it, turn it over in his mind, imagine..

Judas found himself in the temple courts. He sold his Master for a months pocket money…

So he got the silver in his handbag. He was happy for a few hours and then the bitterness of what he had done sank into his greedy, godless mind. His handbag became a dead weight.

Judas threw it in the dirt and fell headlong after it, spilling out his wickedness into a field of blood.

What was in the servants handbag?

A merchant went on a journey for a protracted period of time. He chose his most reliable servants and entrusted them with his wealth, to be wise with it when he was away. He gave one five bags, one two bags and one- one bag. The Master gave the bags of money to his servants according to what he thought they could handle. He was looking for profit, but in his kindness recognised that not everyone is the same..

The servant with five bags worked hard and managed to produce another five bags in profit. The servant with two bags made another two, thereby also doubling the profit from his work.

The third servant was lazy and complacent and had a wrong attitude towards the Master. He just hid the bag and hoped for the best- maybe the Master wouldn’t notice. But the Master did. The lazy servant was punished and he lost everything. Soft-soap didn’t work and the wicked servant was cast into outer darkness.

The other servants who had been astute and creative in making more of the contents of their handbags, were given more and entered into great joy.

Whatever God has given you in your handbag, you need to use it to its full extent, because God looks for fruit where He doesn’t even plant. We are responsible for what we are given and if God gives us large handbags with lots of gifts in them, we are required to fulfil all our abilities for His glory.

What was in Job’s handbag?

Job’s handbag was full of his sins. It was a catalogue of every evil thought, unkind deed and careless word that Job had ever committed. Some Job did not even know about so that his conscience was shielded from burdens too heavy to bear. They were all put in his handbag by his loving God, so that Job wouldn’t have to think of them every day and keep worrying about all he had done wrong against his loving God.

The sins in Job’s bag were sealed up tight so that no one could get into the bag and take them out and examine all the wrongs. It was God’s way of covering over Job’s sin so that he would not be blamed for it. God shielded Job from his sin, so that Job’s life would not be taken over by guilt and dread.

Job had an enemy who was bent on hurt and destruction. Job knew the blame and accusations from the enemy and the so-called “friends” who visited him, were not from God. His handbag was shut by the love and mercy of his Father God.

God delivers His people from the guilt and power of sin and sets them free to love and worship Him with great joy. If we are constantly accused for wrongs, it us not our loving Saviour, but the spite of the enemy. Our account is shut, paid for by the blood of Christ and no one can hurt us or bring us down. The bag is shut and it is important that we don’t open it ourselves and bring pain into our minds and hearts.

Job suffered greatly, and so do we, but the pain of unpaid for sin is not included.

Everyone has a handbag… What we use it for and what we do with the contents will decide our eternal destiny and also the praise we will receive from The Lord…

Rejoicing

img_2344

“On the first day you are to take branches from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees —and rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.” Leviticus 23:40 NIV

Tomorrow is the day we praise the Lord of all and worship Him – no different than any other day. The Christian lives in a “perpetual Sabbath” a state of mind that is in tune with God, forgiven and made alive in Christ by His once for all sacrifice for the sins of His people. Whatever we are doing, our delight in God is not far away and all our failures and disappointments are brought to Him. Accounts are short and the longing to be pleasuring in His sight is a constant motivation.

Let us take up the beauty of the world and magnify His name… The green trees with vivid and luxuriant growth reflect the growth of godliness in our own hearts. The pleasant fruit on these branches denote the fruit of the Spirit in every area of our lives and the acquiescence to the Spirit’s power that infiltrates our being. As we gather on the first day with all we have to rejoice before the Lord, so the other days of the week are full of majesty, worship and holy living…

The spectacle of Christians at worship is not seen in our times as it once was. God’s beauty and the holiness of His name is not revered. We should be exalting His name regardless, because of what He has done and casting out our fear of what other people think. Praise is the activity of God’s faithful people…

“I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths
and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.
You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.
Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;” Psalm 30:1-5

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 NIV

Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, says to the descendants of Jacob:
“No longer will Jacob be ashamed;
no longer will their faces grow pale.
When they see among them their children,
the work of my hands,
they will keep my name holy;
they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob,
and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
Those who are wayward in spirit will gain understanding;
those who complain will accept instruction.” Isaiah 29:22-24 NIV

What The Man did

img_3963

He was born into filth and squalor and obscurity with no social prospects or privileges, so that I might know how unimportant these things are and that greatness is given by God.

He walked this sullen earth day and night, with no place to rest, to show me how to live and to model patience and obedience in the face of adversity.

He had patience with the oppressed and the outcast, forgiving them and giving them dignity, so that I might know it is also possible for the likes of me.

He forgave freely and absolutely, so that no one would have any excuse not to forgive, indeed my forgiveness depends on my forgiving others.

He died a criminal’s death, alone, rejected, yet undefeated. The cross did not kill him; as the Lord of Glory he laid down his life, so that I might never die, even though this flesh shall fail.

He bore an eternity of suffering, contracted into the short space of a few hours, so that I would never have to face an eternity alone, without a loving God and bearing the everlasting pain of a condemning conscience.

He endured the rejection of his father, who turned his back on his own precious son, so that I could be included in his family.

He took the full impact of the wrath of God in punishment for my deep dyed sinfulness, so that I would spend time and eternity living in the joy of his love.

He rose again, quietly and victoriously; only a few saw it at first, but it grew into a huge throng with growing courage against the establishment. He is alive and lives to give life to me and make me like himself.

He is coming soon. Every eye, once dead and alive, shall see him. He returns to bring me home, Oh, glad day! This will be the final consummation, the bride will meet the bridegroom and I will be changed in a moment into the person I was meant to be.

The past

img_3108

The sins of the past have passed away
Washed in the blood spilt that day
Buried with Christ in the tomb and now dead
Forgiven forever just as He said.
But they spring up in my feeble mind
Causing doubt and fear of every kind
My spirit dragged in the gloomy trail
And darkness seems once more to prevail.
The blame of others fuels the flame
Feeding the feeling that it’s all the same
I never came, I never believed
This pointless life is forever grieved.
It’s not up to me the joyful message comes
From the Son who shines inner freedoms
Jesus the Saviour will forgive and win
Every soul who trusts in Him.
Yet they return- all seems lost
Always grief and counting the cost
The pathway is often dark and rough
Progress little and every step is tough.
But this is His Way, as He said it would be
A constant fight to the end of me
Self, daily denied and slain
Over and over again.
He knows it is too much for me
So He sent me you to accompany me
To fight together and stay the course
The Words our every day discourse.
Will we walk or will we faint?
A ” Christian” life daubs of paint?
Or will the Spirit’s power within
Overcome the grip of sin.
We do have strength to choose the right
Resurrection power will fight
So death in us is truly dead
And Christ alone our living head.
