Do what He says

John 2:4-7 NIV
“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

What a dignity we see here in the Lord Jesus, at the very start of His earthly ministry. His obedience is to the Father, and not His own will, or the wishes of the people around Him. How firmly He stands on the divine sovereignty that is His own, in complete unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit. The whole ministry of Christ is spectacular in its consistency and humility. The eternal Son of God, is involved with human affairs that also elevate His goodness and greatness beyond any other person ever known.

His attitude to His mother “Dear woman” so perfectly respectful and yet stating His divine person above merely human desires. Jesus never wavers from this and never abandons His human relationships even in extreme poverty and suffering. We are not so. Situations become too difficult and we draw back. We are mortal and full of fears and it take our whole lives to learn the power of God in our human mindset. To walk as He walked is our goal and we need to learn to trust God for all our relationships. Only He can make us able to shoulder all that He requires of us.

The attitude and response of Mary, is equally amazing. She is the only one who really sees and understands something of what her Son came to do. She knows He is very different- Joseph is not His father, and angels have spoken into His life right from the start. She knows where His authority comes from and she realises Jesus is always right in all His thinking and ways. Mary tells the servants to “do whatever He tells you..” all authority belongs to Christ and we do well to obey Him in every regard.

How am I to know what He wants?
I must study the Word, so that I know His person, thoughts, will and character. I must draw near in prayer, and spend much time in His presence, learning to speak like Him and think like Him. I need to listen to hear His voice, to discern His voice from other voices and to trust Him completely. As I come to the Lord, I rejoice to know Him and become glad in the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The scriptures are so precious, and every word teaches me and calls me closer to my Father in heaven. This is the point of setting aside times for fellowship with God so that I will grow in faith and love. Christ will involve Himself with us and teach us lessons so that we will be like Him.

Whatever you are doing for God, keep serving and obeying Him and you will get to know Him better and better as you follow.
