Fear

The fear of death holds us in chains

Barriers on a river of peace unrestrained

Calling us to futile hope in ourselves

Duping us as hollow all this life entails.

The heavenly man became human out of choice

Giving His death throws a mortal voice

Since God is our friend and source of release

Giving the option of eternal peace.

The higher beings of creation bear no such gift

Their rebellion to eternal chains does shift

No salvation for their monumental mistake

Their destiny in the darkest realms now take.

But the human, male and female set apart

For the radiant glory all from a Father’s heart

Can enter heaven with souls redeemed

And a mind renewed, as the Saviour dreamed.

Fear is the state of all who forget God

His love and peace in the dirt and mire trod

But the ransomed few who have learned His ways

Will inherit the kingdom and everlasting life displayed.

Psalm 23

551360D2-62C7-44A2-A0B2-E68A8F9472A0

There is nothing I need.
I rest in plenty and in quietness.
My soul is refreshed in the Lord my God.
My Saviour shows me the right way to go.
When I descend into depression, He is with me always.
The Sovereign Lord comforts me with reproof and encouragement.
I am lifted up above my enemies.
He anoints me as His royal ruler beside Him.
I am overcome with the joy of the Lord.
God’s perfections will be my guide through out my whole life.
I will dwell with my God forever.

Rejoice

Stress and guilt are the reasons for Christmas
Making arrangements and buying the presents
Worry about the choices we make
Will everyone like the mince pies and cake.?
The shops are full of noise and tinsel
Headache and heartburn the over-riding principal
Decorate the house for the children to enjoy
Reinforce the aptitude for joy that will cloy
On the day I can hardly get out of bed
Tired and irritable I face the food that is fed
When the presents are open and I sit by the fire
I close my eyes and another view will transpire
I see the stable, the mother and baby
A father who stands over his family ready
To protect and care for this small, little boy
Who saves us all from the sins that destroy
Those lies that pull us into the wants of this life
Bringing such pain, failure and strife
He bursts the chains of the prison asunder
Opening eyes to gaze upon the wonder.
In the middle of life I am reminded of death
He came to redeem us from shibboleth
There is more than we see and a life in the soul
He has ransomed the penetant and made them whole.

Nephilim

“A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak! Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee….

….Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.”     Deuteronomy 9:2-5

In those early ages of this worlds history, there were many surprising things and people, who’s existence makes us incredulous. There were things that we will never know of, and achievements by ancient people’s that we cannot work out. The amazing design and engineering feats of ancient Babylon and ancient Israel, are hidden to our vaunted intelligence.

There were people that we cannot imagine, and therefore we question their existence. The children of Anak are such people. This race of humans, who have long gone, were of great height and scale. The records show people reaching ten feet and more. They were intimidating and valued as warriors and leaders of many ancient tribes, such as the Kezzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Hivites, and more.

The people of Anak came from beings called Nephilim. These were thought to be “sons of God” that came down and took human women as their partners. It is unclear who these Nephilim were, but some think they were fallen angels who tried to pollute further the human race with their progeny. These Anakin people were mighty and did many deeds of courage and valour in human society. It is believed they were wiped out by the Flood, which left only Noah and his seven family members alive.

It is thought by some, that the “sons of God” also came into post-deluge society. The Philistines had their giant warrior in the form of Goliath, who the young David, king of Israel, faced up to. God gave David the victory over this massive enemy, as He said He would. It is hard to understand how demons could interact with the human genome, and how this would play out to the present day… there remains much we don’t know and don’t understand. We leave this issue with God.

We can learn much from the giant Goliath, for the benefit of our spiritual lives. All these things are recorded in God’s Word, to teach and challenge and encourage us in our walk with God.

No matter how large or how intimidating the enemy is, God promises the victory to all who trust in Him. David was able to defeat and kill his enemy, Goliath, in the power of the Lord. Indeed, David designates Goliath as an enemy of God. David loved God and spent long periods of time alone with Him, and learned strength and confidence through the circumstances of his life. This is why David was victorious.

It was a similar situation with the overtaking of Canaan by the Israelite nation. God gave the promised land of Canaan into the hands of His people. God points out to them, that it was not because of their goodness that they were given the land, but only by God’s Grace.

We also gain the plains of heaven and victory over sin and death through the grace of God. God honours those who honour Him and who trust His power to make them over-comers and show His glory to a watching world.

We are not physical Anakites, but our souls should be mighty for God and we will overcome through Christ our Lord.

Today is the day

Today is the day to seek the Lord

Put aside our argument and listen to His Word

He calls you out from indolence and fear

Offers His salvation and His rest to cheer

Our feeble hearts and our weak knees

His strength will free you from spiritual agonies

That wait for those who loiter in unbelief

Unwilling and unable to escape eternal grief

If you hear Him speak, do not delay

Christ your debt did fully pay

Hear the call and fall at His feet

Forgiveness find, the Spirit you will meet

You will not perish, but power receive

From sin and death a complete reprieve

To find the rest of the Eternal God

A gift of His love and a resurrection overawed

It is life and peace in our ever-living soul

Our eyes fixed on the heavenly goal.

To turn from hardness, find the peace of God

Escape the punishment under the rod

To be a daughter or son of the most high

Our destiny kept, far beyond the sky.

“For you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves… He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents….”

Malachi 4:2,6

The path to social and family peace, is through Christ. No one can change the heart like Him. We live in the shadow of conflict and ill will is never far from our experience. It’s easy to be upset with people and not easy to make sacrifices for people, especially people who annoy us.!

But God can break down our fences, which we put up to keep other people out. A common conflict area is family differences, where we get annoyed with those we live close to and share the closest of human ties. Family love can ebb and flow, and the circumstances of our lives sometimes pull us way from our nearest and dearest.

There is a point in every life, when it is time to move on and make our own decisions about what we will do and the shape our life will take. There is a time to trust God for all the things we need and to seek His forgiveness for all our wrongs. Now is the time to come to God and love Him and put our faith in what He has done for us. This bedrock love of God will give strength and substance to all other loves.

The Holy Spirit can change hearts in ways we do not understand, even hearts that don’t want His way. The power of the Spirit can even change that situation and cause us to see our need. His power is limitless, and when we actively seek Him, we will find Him. He is the bringer of peace, and He can turn our wayward minds to follow Him and find the delight in walking through life in His presence.

We find ourselves honouring God and holding His name in high regard. We are His people and we are earnest about living as He would want us to live. To love God brings massive reward. The Lord Jesus is referred to here, as the “Sun of righteousness.” This He is. He is the one who can make us righteous, even though we are not. All righteousness comes from Christ, and all righteous people are His people, because He has paid the price for their release from the bonds of sin and death.

As the healing rays of righteousness emanate from the Saviour Jesus, so we are covered by His perfect life and His sacrificial death. These rays fall on the people of God and we are full of light, and heat and peace. Only Jesus can conquer the power of sin in our lives. When we realise this we are full of Joy. “The joy of the Lord is your strength…”

So we gain freedom, power, comfort and joy to live our lives for God and to serve and share with other people this amazing provision made for anyone who will come and repent and believe. There is only one sun, the sun that shines in righteousness, and will give to any who seek that light and heat, and become alive to God.

Sure and certain

Christ in you, the hope of glory.“

Colossians 1: 27

Christ died, one time for all time and for all who would believe. Those who receive His power, know Him and will repent and believe through every trouble.

This presence, this power, this perfection, is not ours, but a free gift from God. If His presence dwells within, we have a living hope for glory.  The felt knowledge of His presence and power is a strong encouragement and sign that we belong to Him.

Yet there are times when we do not feel or have assurance of our salvation. The passion has gone, and there is no sense that the Lord is with us. Doubt takes hold and we sink down into spiritual depression. What brings us to that place? The hope has gone and we are left with no hope and no future. We can be brought so low, that we start to question the reality of our faith. Our mind starts to unravel the experiences that brought us to Christ, and we interpret them in a negative way. the Scriptures that are brought to our mind, back up the negative mindset. We can be brought very low…

We doubt. We doubt ourselves. We doubt the Lord.

For the Christian, this is a painful place and full of tortuous thoughts and monumental blame. The doubt that you don’t belong to God, and are so distressed by this thought, is really the proof that you are His. But the blame game of the mind, precludes us from seeing this. It is a prison of the mind and only that healing of the mind can bring the heart and soul into a stable and secure place.

The fact that a person belongs to Christ, cannot be changed. We cannot belong and not belong. For the sufferer, we continue to trust and keep living, and wait for the deliverance which will surely come. God brings us through such trials, so that we will emerge strong and disciplined in our life with Him.

Our hope of glory may fade at some points in our lives, but we will overcome, if we do not give up. We persevere under the trial, until we get back that precious sense of His love for us and that we belong to Him. Although our hope of glory might seem to fade, we can never loose that glory, because we are kept by the power of God. Feelings are good when they cooperate, but so often, they do not. Faith does not depend on feelings. Faith holds on when all else falls away. Christ in us, by the power of His Spirit, will bring us safely home to where we belong.

“Count it all joy, my brothers , when you fall into various temptations…”     James 1:2

This is the attitude and thought processes of God in Christ. When troubles come, they are not considered problems or negative experiences, but positive. In fact, the attitude is an expression of joy. Joyful thoughts and feelings about the painful events in life, is not the natural human way. We would seek to avoid trouble and do everything in our power to get out of painful situations. The Christian is here encouraged to embrace the sufferings and as they lift their eyes to their father God, to be thankful. Even more to rejoice. Continue reading

Women standing

93CB3313-2DC3-407A-B04B-E11736BFD9CA

When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how He had breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

And there were also women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. These women had followed Jesus and ministered to Him while He was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.”             Mark 15: 35-41

The women held to their courage and faith. Everyone else, except John, had run away and were in hiding. The women kept vigil through the darkness and distress, and kept their eyes on the Lord their God. They stood under the darkness of God’s wrath and watched Him bear it all away. They all gazed, transfixed, at a love not understood nor seen before. This the end of all dreams and wishes and desires; the peace they had longed for; a heaven now hopeless, as the darkness closed in.

Was it all in vain? The care, the love, the sacrifice… but now this one sacrifice made by Jesus, one sacrifice for sin forever…

They hoped beyond hope, though His body hang as a lifeless corpse. Surely there was no way back from this. The life of God, snuffed out with ease and jubilation. Even as they looked, their love comforted them. Maybe there is another love beyond theirs, a love that transcends all time, space, pain and disappointment. A love that purges sin away and has a power not of this world’s knowing. A love reflected in their continual standing.. waiting for the promise to be kept…

“Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”     Matthew 28:20

Chosen people

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”.      John 15:16

This verse, when read and meditated on, is a terrible shock to many Christians. It is in no way passive in the demands for our response to it, though for some who lack insight, it might seem so.

No person comes to faith in Christ through their own efforts, whether those efforts are imagined belief, or good works that we think we do.

“Salvation is of the Lord…”      Jonah 2:9

This was true in Jonah’s day and the same in our day. Without the work of the Holy Spirit in our minds and souls, we will never comes to God. No matter how positively God is presented, we will never bow the knee to Him. We hear about the sacrifice Jesus our Saviour made for us, and we don’t want it.

“We will not have this man to reign over us..”     Luke 19:14

We think we hang on to some freedom to live our lives for ourselves and make our own choices, but we are caught in a web of sins that we cannot escape from. We think God will be pleased with us if we make an effort to be good, not realising how sinful we really are. God is holy, not mostly holy, but He will not look on sin at all. We do not see the sin in our lives, unless God points it out to us.

We turn from Him who holds our total forgiveness and a life with Him beyond our imaginings. Our minds are dull and we do not see His working in our lives, to bring us to faith. We think faith us something we can whoop up and fool God that we are for Him. We believe certain things about God, but then, so does the devil.

Unless God permits us to see and feel our sin, and understand what Jesus has done for us, we will not believe. We cannot see our need nor the amazing life God offers to us, because we rely on ourselves. We think we are good enough for God and we can help ourselves. This belief is not based on truth, but is the act of a human will trapped in a sinful mindset. To carry on in this way will lead us to destruction.

To be delivered from this state, we must pray that God will show us our need and allow us to see Him in all His love and beauty. When we understand what Jesus did for us, let us lay down our puny weapons and cast ourselves on Him. There will be a complete change in our inner selves, which will show itself in fruit for God. Whatever we do in His mighty name will bring great blessing. Whatever we ask for, we will receive, for we will ask rightly.

A Christian says goodbye to self and sin and enters the peace of God and the victory over all that troubles our souls..
