Psalm 119:33-40 NIV
“Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.”
The Christian follows right to the end. The Christian is particular about walking according to God’s ways and following Him. We look at Jesus, the one who our faith comes from and the one who will bring us safely home to heaven, by this same faith.
We begin the path of life in faith. We continue every day in faith, constantly seeking direction from the Lord in His holy Word. We realise we need these words more than anything in this world. Seeking this world is selfish gain. It ruins us for God and heaven.
Our eyes must always be towards the Lord. If we let them linger on the things that attract us, we will loose our spiritual life and become useless. Our delight in the truth of God will dim and His promises will mean nothing to us. We pray that God will keep us and fulfil His will in our lives, so that we will recognise Him and be in awe of who He is. A Christian fears the Lord, and fears to fall into sin.
The disgrace of our past sins is a dread to us. The fear of falling into sin again, is a shame to us. We pray that God will take away our disgrace and give us holiness in return.
The constant longing of the Christian is for the law of God to be real to them every day. The Christian realises there is no other way to holiness and to God, than to be preserved by God every day of their lives.
His laws are good. His way is perfect. Faith in Him pleases Him. Total trust is the only way. If we look to the things or people of this life, we will be disappointed and God will be disappointed in us. We must not waver.
Lord, teach us your decrees, that we will follow them until we step into eternity.
Lord, turn my heart to you, and away from me.
Lord, I trust what you say and to you alone I cling…
